The Premiere Sailing League will increase awareness of the sport with an innovative approach to every aspect, from boat usage to who can put together a team, to stadium sailing geared to bring new fans to the sport.
The purpose of the Premiere Sailing League is to provide a platform where sailors from different backgrounds can compete in a fun, dynamic, fast-paced competition that has been conceived and structured to be easily understood by the media and non-sailing audiences.
The Premiere Sailing League will use one-design boats: special-editions of the well-known RS21 with pre-tuned rigs. Adjustments will be limited to sail settings, travelers, fairleads and vangs.
The first step in the annual series is the District Qualification Regattas using RS21s. Twelve sailors will constitute a team, with no requirement to belong to a specific yacht club or sailing association. Competitors may be as young as 13 and may be from any club, sailing center, school, academy, college or maritime academy in their District. The USA will be divided into four districts: North, East, South and West. After the District Qualification Regattas, teams will move on to race RS21s for the National Finals – and top ranking in the League.
At each competition, four sailors will represent their team in each race, with no restriction on switching in/out members during rotations between races. The competition will follow a fast format: short windward/leeward courses with, depending on the breeze, as many as 20 races a day on courses close to shore to provide sensational stadium-style entertainment for the local and international audience by live broadcast.
